Abstract

The relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has made two highly publicized discoveries: first, the jet suppression, suggests that the medium created at RHIC is highly opaque. The other, elliptic flow, implies that this matter is very highly thermalized, and might be the "best fluid" ever found in nature. If true, these findings suggest that the energy deposited by the jets in the medium is also locally thermalized, and propagates through the Quark-Gluon Liquid as a "Mach Cone", the characteristic hydrodynamic shock associated with supersonic flight. In this lecture a theoretical and phenomenological overview of this phenomenon will be given. After a short introduction to RHIC phenomenology, the physics of jet energy deposition into a fluid will be described, both within relativistic hydrodynamics with a QCD equation of state, and through the analysis of infinitely strongly coupled conformal Plasma (possible via the so-called AdS/CFT correspondence). The ways to test the Mach Cone hypothesis, and to link therelevant experimental data to the transport properties of the matter created at RHIC ( Equation of state and transport coefficients) will also be described. The conclusion will be drawn with an assessment of the currently available data, and the prospects of studying Mach Cones and the LHC.
